Hozpitality Plus- Dedicated Hospitality Networking group

Need some great points, advise and suggestions in rder to handle a typical sterao type "Hitler" - shouts and dominates , does not appreciate anything, has no respect to others, demands things to be done "yesterday". does not listen to reason, Calls it "Drama".

Very agrressive and abusive, no regards to anothers dignity. Always sees fault even in something good being done. Screams and tries to humiliate. Has no patience and shows no concern for anyone else, but himself.

A basic control freak.

Can anyone tell me how to deal with such unprofessional personalities. have I have given up so much to take up this rubbish. Do we deserve this treatment. Is it worth.

How very easy to say!

Yes if everyone takes the easy way out, "You don't like it you leave it" then these people continue to behave the way the want to. In this mordern days "Hitler's regime" is long over.

A great leader only works beside his team, motivating them, not from tehbehind not from the front but alongside your men, that was how many a war was own.

If every one resigns just because the captian does not know to steer his ship, what to do think will happen to the ship, (establishment). You need people to run any business it is the staff that are most important at any hospitality establishment an unhappy team member only displeases the guests...

However, this has nothing to with being happy or unhappy with ones job! it is how to deal with morons, we find bullies every where.

Anyway thanks for your imput.
It is very difficult to work with a tyrant for a boss for any self respecting individual. Since he is your boss you cannot challenge him in public or private unless you are ready to give up your job and leave. If you need the job then you have to suffer in silence, or you can look for another job and once you have it then give your boss hell which he has been giving you and walk out with dignity.

It is very important to work with peace of mind in your workplace. As it is we are all working with enough pressure of our individual responsibilities regarding our work and on top if you have to handle a hitler than you are going to fall sick with all the pressure.

Health is wealth keep in mind. No job is worth sacrificing your health.

All the best.
The best reply so far..... Thanks
Actualy I agree with Dr. Vic, We must be happy in the place we are working on, how can you stays in such bad uncomfortable enviroment, how long you can manage it? We ‘ll get depressed easily, especially when you have to face the guest, can we smile purely? No way, I’ve been like that before, wasn’t felt right.

Then I decided have to move on, myself can’t accept that, so I left but some of my friends has another choices to do, they made petition. Which I think is greats success.
if you have a boss like the one mentioned, no need to fret, be nice to him, dont retaliate, whenever possible try to talk to him some matters that interest him, be unselfish towards him, try to share your feelings in a different way...jack said it!! Be very observant to read his weaknesses, every human being has one, buy him a bouquet of flowers whenever some eventful occassion comes up, and do not give up, maybe he has a warm heart inside, and does not know how to project. These are some , and one employed with him/her, will know better but dont leave the battlefield as a defeat. Joe
look for another job dont work at a place where you are not respected
It takes two to tango...i.e. someone can only feel superior if the other feels inferior.
The shouting, the dominating and the himiliating is basically "noise" which you've interpreted and given
it meaning. You can't control how someone else behaves. You can only control how you respond.

Your boss is also responding to your behaviour. He or she has not tied chains around you or put a gun to your head. He or she will change their behaviour if you change yours. It would appear that your current behaviour or response is not making them change. What must you change so that they will respond to you in the way that you want them to be.

As an example, if the boss screams, politely inform them that you can hear him/her perfectly well without the need to raise his/her voice and ask him/her what she/he wants done and you will do it straightaway.

To change your boss you need to change how you respond to his/her actions.

Focus on yourself, not your boss and the situation will change.
When an employee is on probation there is a some understanding to be given until the person in concern adapts to his/her new enviornment and task.

No one screams and expects a newly recruited employee to know the entire set-up of the organistaion in one day.

Also in my opinion one does not need to change for some elses bad behaviour, no one need to adapt to such manaics.

There is nothing wrong in the other person behaviour the person comes from a highly professional field having years of expereince.

There is always a give and take in any relationship. The employer should also maintain and know his/her limits and attitudes towards his/her employees. It is when you give respect that you gain respect.

The query brought forward is for a presentation and I thank everyone who has responded to this.
I think Ms Regina Beck has said it all. I was going to write the same, Bravo Ms Beck.
Hi.... unless an employee gets a job satisfaction with employer, collegues and working environment one cannot give the results he/she is capable of. If employer only behaves like this and create such unhealthy atmosphere, i am doubt the organization can grow in upward direction, hence its advisable to look for an alternate.
Very true - Like Regina Beck say it takes two to tango. it is only a matter of time until such people meet their match who will stand up and dish out the same treatment. It is only that way that such ego eccentric maniacs can be brought down.

No one needs to succumb to such abusive behaviour, which could be considered as "harrassment" and in most cases if the employee is strong enough they could end up taking such individuals to task.

Management of any organisation should also provide training to all higher management heirachy on the right ettiquete and attitude towards your employees.

Most times I see that employees are too reluctant to report these atrocities which is very wrong, but for certain reason of their own they just do not stand up. People should have the courage to stand up and defend their own dignities and self respect which is everyones right.
“Read what our colleagues have mentioned below”, they seem to have covered all the points. Tempers losing tend to be a reaction to an action which external (from above) or internal from the immediately area around. Check first what you are doing and then as mentioned discussion and communication are the way forward. I have had mentors who have been strict and hard in the pass but they had my best at heart.

Best of luck
